Gellert

A stately residence in Basel’s Gellert neighborhood required a sensitive reworking of its upper floor to accommodate new built-in closets and the conversion of a small bedroom into an en-suite bathroom. The villa, built in 1924, is an especially distinctive example of the Traditionalism typical of its period, which drew inspiration from middle-class architecture around 1800. In keeping with this ideal, the style favored clearly defined geometric volumes, restrained individual forms, understated ornamentation, and—particularly in its craftsmanship—an honest use of materials and refined simplicity.

Our interventions sought to continue these themes. All of the modern architectural millwork is rendered with a special painting technique evoking a subtle wood graining.
