Bachletten 2

A 19th century single family row house in Basel’s Bachletten Quarter was enlarged by removing the roof and rear fassade, then building two new floors of five bedrooms and two bathrooms, in engineered wood construction. The massive stone construction of the ground floor street fassade was preserved, while the upper floors and rear fassade were clad in brightly colored wood to express the tectonic nature of the extension. The worn ground floor stair was renovated with new treads and risers, raised to meet the new level of under-floor heating. The newly built stair on the upper level was designed to be a jewel-like object as the heart of the house of the extension. At the rear of the house, a light frame balcony structure extends the rooms towards the garden while visually reducing the height of the three-story fassade. The garden becomes a comfortable outdoor living room in the middle of the city.
