Bachletten 2
A 19th century single family row house in Basel’s Bachletten Quarter was enlarged by removing the roof and rear fassade, then building two new floors with five bedrooms and two bathrooms, in engineered wood construction. The ground floor street-facing stone fassade was preserved, while the new upper floors and rear fassade were clad in brightly colored wood planks to express the tectonic nature of the extension. The age-worn ground floor stair was renovated with new treads and risers, raised to meet the new level of under-floor heating. The newly built stair of the upper floors was designed to be a jewel-like object as the center of the house extension. At the rear of the house, a light frame balcony structure extends the rooms towards the garden while visually reducing the height of the three-story fassade. The garden becomes a comfortable outdoor living room in the middle of the city.
